When Maserati decided to return to racing, they spared no expenses. After a brief respite of 37 years, they needed a car capable of bringing home a 1st place trophy. Nothing in their inventory was even close to a GT1 car, so they asked their corporate cousins for help. Ferrari allowed them to borrow some of the chassis and powertrain components of the Enzo to build the ultimate Maserati.
The MC12 was purely intended as a race car. It used a 745 horsepower V12 to win the FIA GT Manufacturer’s cup in 2005. Following that success, street legal versions were built for homologation purposes and collectors quickly hid them away.
This example left Maserati Motorsports fans without a way to enjoy their victory, so the factory decided to build 12 examples for track use only. The MC12 Corse, or Corsa, is a race car. It has monster cams, Sparco seats, Willans harness belts, and a sequential transmission. It offers no apologies. It will scare everyone around you. The shortened nose was mandated by the ALMS for the GT1 cars, so its virtually ready to race. Only a dozen examples were built, and each one was stored and maintained for its owner by the factory.
