Ol’ Blue Eyes understood that Lamborghini and their customers demand the best, and won’t accept anything less, no matter the cost. Lamborghini’s first production model, the Muira, was a hit. It was produced from 1966 to 74, and was a mid engine V12 powerhouse. For a follow-up, they knew it had to be wild. Bertone was responsible for the sensuous curves and long hood of the Muira, and they were asked for something completely different. What emerged changed automotive design forever.
With almost no curves to be found and only 42 inches tall, the Countach is as subtle and calm as a train crash. The cockpit was moved far forward to make room for a larger V12. To achieve a perfect weight balance, the transmission is mounted in front of the engine with the driveshaft running through the oil pan to the differential. No expenses were spared in the body either. Military grade aluminum alloy was bonded to a tubular steel space frame. As a result the car was light and very stiff. Very tall door sills meant traditional doors were out. The solution was the iconic scissor doors that have been with Lamborghini ever since.
Power initially came from a 4.0L V12. It had dual overhead cams, Weber carburetors and two giant valves per cylinder. In 1985, a US-spec version debuted with Bosch fuel injection and displacement was raised to 5.2L. The biggest change was ditching the twin valve for four valves per cylinder. Having two intake and exhaust valves per cylinder helps high-rpm breathing and allows the engine to rev much faster. Very few were imported to the United States, as the price was well over $100,000 at the time. The ones that did make it over had to contend with drivers who couldn’t handle the power. You won’t see another one for years, unless you grab this one now.[aio_button align=”center” animation=”pulse” color=”red” size=”small” icon=”shopping-cart” text=”View Listing” target=”_blank” relationship=”dofollow” url=”http://bit.ly/1gUmNsU”]
